Privacy Policy — What Was I Watching

App: What Was I Watching (iOS, watchOS, Android)
Developer: 1791 Entertainment

Overview

What Was I Watching helps you remember the TV shows and movies you've been watching. We believe your viewing habits are personal. This policy explains what data the app handles, where it lives, and who sees it. The short version: almost nothing leaves your device, and we never see your watch history.

What we collect from you

Nothing. We do not ask for your name, email, phone number, or any account. There is no sign-up and no login. We do not collect advertising identifiers or track you across apps.

What the app stores on your device

  • The list of shows and movies you've added
  • Notes, ratings, and streaming services you associate with each
  • Local reminders and app preferences

On iOS and watchOS, this data is synced across your own Apple devices using Apple's iCloud (CloudKit) in your private iCloud database. We have no access to it. Apple's privacy policy governs the sync.

On Android, this data is stored only on the device you installed the app on. It is not synced to any cloud in version 1.

Uninstalling the app deletes all of its local data. On iOS, you can also delete the data from iCloud via Settings → [your name] → iCloud → What Was I Watching → Delete Data.

Third-party services the app uses

1. TelemetryDeck (analytics)

We use TelemetryDeck for privacy-respecting aggregate analytics (e.g., "how many users opened the app today"). TelemetryDeck does not collect personal data or track individual users. It salts and hashes a device identifier before it ever reaches their servers. See telemetrydeck.com/privacy.

2. Movie / TV metadata lookup

When you search for a show, the app sends the search query to our lookup service, which relays it to The Movie Database (TMDB) (themoviedb.org). These queries contain only the show title you typed — no personal information and no information about your device or account. We do not log these queries on our servers.

3. Apple Push Notification service / Apple iCloud (iOS and watchOS only)

Apple's standard platform services. Governed by Apple's privacy policy.

We do not use ad networks, social media SDKs, crash reporters that collect personal data, or any tracking tools beyond the above.

Permissions the app requests

Android:

  • INTERNET and ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE — to look up show metadata and detect whether you're online.

iOS / watchOS:

  • No permissions beyond what the system grants by default. The app does not ask for your location, camera, microphone, contacts, or photo library.

Deep links

The app can open directly to a show when you tap a link of the form https://www.1791entertainment.com/show/?title=..., using Apple Universal Links / Android App Links. When the app is installed, the link opens the app directly and no web request is made.

When the app is not installed, the same URL opens a fallback web page. That page fires an anonymous Google Analytics pageview recording the show title and TMDB ID, but not any sender, recipient, or personal identifier — user-entered URL parameters (from=, note=) are stripped before analytics fire. See the website privacy policy for details.

The /wwiw/ marketing page

The landing page at https://www.1791entertainment.com/wwiw/ is a website page (not part of the app) and uses Google Analytics 4 and the Reddit Pixel for traffic measurement and ad attribution. See the website privacy policy for the full disclosure, including Do Not Track support and opt-out options.

Children's privacy

What Was I Watching is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children. The app has no account system and collects no personal data, so there is nothing for a child's parent to request deletion of beyond uninstalling the app.

Security

Because we do not collect your data, there is no server-side account or database of user information to secure. Data on your device is protected by the platform's encryption (iOS Data Protection, Android File-Based Encryption).

Changes to this policy

If we materially change this policy, we will update the "Last updated" date below and, where the change affects app behavior, note it in the app's release notes.

Accessibility

See the accessibility statement for the assistive technologies the app supports and known limitations.
